Tribute to the artist Denis Poirier | VIVA MÉDIA Skip to main content

Following the regrettable departure of artist and sculptor Denis Poirier, the Beauharnois-Salaberry RCM and its Cultural Council extend their sincere sympathies to family and loved ones. The VIVA MÉDIA team would also like to extend its sympathies to the bereaved loved ones.

Mr. Denis Poirier was awarded the “Prix Reynald-Piché” in 2017. He was alongside, in order, Mr. Éric Filiatrault, member of the Cultural Council, Mrs. Karine Landerman, then President of the Cultural Council, Mr. Miguel Lemieux, Mayor of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Mrs. Geneviève St-Pierre, then Cultural Development Coordinator at the RCM, Mr. Jacques Lecavalier, former work colleague at the Collège de Valleyfield, as well as Mr. Gaétan Ménard, elected representative on the Cultural Council. The region is losing a great artist and an outstanding ambassador of culture who has left us a significant legacy through his work, particularly in the public scene. It will be remembered that the artist was the recipient in 2017 of the prestigious “Prix Reynald-Piché” in commemoration of all of his work and over 45 years of career. The moment took on a somewhat surreal aspect, as Mr. Poirier was presented with an award named after one of his best friends and a valued colleague with whom he has worked with many times on a professional level.

A native of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Mr. Poirier saw his talent shine on the vast artistic and cultural scene. A fellow of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (Québec) and the Canada Council for the Arts, he will eventually become a teacher in the arts department at Valleyfield College, where he will meet Reynald Piché.

Even today, enjoying his two emblematic work that he co-created with Mr. Piché in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, such as the historical monument Le soufflé d’Éole (1996) in front of the Hôtel Plaza and Neptune (2013), paying tribute to the Régates de Valleyfield, we can only better understand the greatness of this artist. The elected officials and members of the Cultural Council of the RCM therefore join in sending their most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Poirier. They also wish to pay tribute and show their deepest gratitude to this honourable artist.
