Breakout novelist Robert Pobi featured at Rigaud literary event | VIVA MÉDIA Skip to main content

Quebec author Robert Pobi has been noticed by the likes of Oprah Winfrey and a rapidly growing list in the literary world of suspense/thrillers. Pobi’s debut novel, Bloodman (Thomas & Mercer) was chosen last summer by O, The Oprah Magazine, for their summer 2012 reading list.

Quebec author Robert Pobi will be featured next week in Rigaud during a Quebec Writers’ Federation Writers Out Loud series.

Fellow author Bill Haugland as interviewer

And those who have not yet heard of the author whose first novel was described as “…a remarkable debut…” by Booklist, and “…a relentless, driving masterpiece…” by Suspense Magazine, will get the chance to meet Pobi in person when he appears next week at the Rigaud library. The May 9 event that will include fellow author and former CFCF broadcaster Bill Haugland, is part of the Quebec Writers’ Federations’s Writers Out Loud series, which showcases English-language writers from across the province. It will feature Haugland, author of After it Rains: Short Stories, The Bidding, Mobile 9: A Novel, and Mobile 9, acting as interviewer.

Pobi, who lives in the region, will release his second novel, River of the Dead (Simon & Schuster) in Canada in early 2014. It will also be released in the UK next month by Random House UK.

The author, who jokingly admits his work comes from a “bothered mind,” is expected to read an excerpt from one of his books during next week’s event even though he admits reading his work out loud is one of his least favourite pastime.

River of the Dead will introduce readers to Detective Alexandra Hemingway as she tries to solve a series of murders during a New York City heat wave. Hemingway must figure out who is killing good-looking young boys before more are murdered.

According to the Quebec Writers’ Federation website, the goal of the Writers Out Loud series is to introduce audiences to featured writers while letting them get to know the person behind the words. The event promises good conversations and some laughs.

Debut novel

Pobi’s Bloodman, which debuted on March 1, 2012, is a chilling tale about FBI consultant Jake Cole, who returns to his childhood home on Montauk, NY, to care for his ailing father. While there, Cole is called in to help solve a local but gruesome double murder that may be linked to his past, even as a deadly and powerful hurricane bears down on the Eastern seaboard.

The Author’s conference with Bill Haugland and Robert Pobi will be held at 7 p.m. on May 9, at the Rigaud Municipal Library, 102, rue Saint-Pierre, Rigaud. To reserve a seat, call 450 451-8841.
