ARE WE AWARE OF THE SIGNS? | VIVA MÉDIA Skip to main content

During the last week of January, MWCN employees participated in 2 very informative Seminars: “Elder Abuse” hosted by ARC – Assistance & Referral Centre, presented by CIUSSS West-Central, and “What is Domestic Violence” hosted my MWCN, presented by La Passerelle. Sensitive subjects, but important ones none-the-less.

These two seminars were quite the eye-opener for all of us. Perhaps we’ve all been focused on taking care of ourselves and our families during this unfamiliar territory of a pandemic, that perhaps we’ve missed signs that some of our friends and neighbors are not alright.

“Mistreatment” can occur in many forms intentionally or unintentionally. It is not always obvious at first glance, especially if we are not paying attention. Remember that abuse or neglect includes Physical, Sexual, Psychological, Financial, Violation of Rights and Ageism.

If we feel that someone is being mistreated, how do we even approach something this difficult without assuming or pre-judging a situation? During the seminars, it was pointed out that someone just might not be ready to ask for help, and therefore, it is very important to respect limits. Some of the more common reasons people find it hard to reach out for help is because they feel shame and guilt, or that their situation is a private matter.

On the other hand, it is crucial that when someone finally finds the courage to confide in us, that we “listen” and make sure they know we “believe” them. This is important if they are going to take the next step.

Unfortunately, it is a fine line in determining if action is required. And because we do not always have the capabilities to help, nor are we professionals to deal with these situations, we have shared a few resources below that might help guide us all.

So, let’s be a little more observant. Let’s keep an eye-out for that sad smile, or a look of despair that reaches us to our depths. Let’s pay attention to our intuitions, hunches, and instincts.

Remember that it doesn’t always mean there’s a problem. Perhaps it’s just loneliness and isolation, in which case, reaching out a friendly hand could change someone’s life.
