Donations sought for Westwood self-worth event
Female students from Westwood Sr. High School in Hudson are paying it forward by bringing a popular all-night empowerment event to younger students at Westwood Jr. in Saint Lazare.
But organizers say they need the public’s help to make sure the April 30 Girls Night In is a success for the expected 115 girls attending. The overnight conference that is now in its third year – though this is the first year the event is being offered to grades 7 and 8 junior high girls – is aimed at boosting the young participants’ self-worth and confidence.
Coordinator Misty Simes says the giant sleepover aims to empower females through a community of sisterhood and kindness.
The non-stop evening includes a list of workshops that can inspiring the young teens to be strong, confident and compassionate citizens.
Past Girls Night In evenings included such things as self defense workshops, talks about healthy heating and proper skincare, fitness and health workshops, and a host of kindness exercises, among other things.
The evening is planned throughout the year by members of a female leadership club. Also helping will be older student mentors, staff and invited guests.
A main theme of the seminar will be fostering compassion in the teens while helping them realize what it feels like to walk in someone else’s shoes.
In order to plan the Girls Night In and keep it affordable, Simes says the club is seeking donations of food or beverages to be used during the evening, products that can be placed in gift bags each girl will receive, or financial donations that can be used to help keep costs down. The event will also conclude with a draw and Simes says prize donations are also welcome.
‘To allow every female student an opportunity to participate, any product would be greatly appreciated,’ Simes says in a letter being distributed to community businesses and organizations. For information or to make a donation call Westwood Sr. at 514 798-4900.
